Water is key to reaching net zero

What is the Water Initiative for Net Zero?

The Water Initiative for Net Zero (WINZ) promotes water’s role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions to prevent global heating. Recent studies have clearly demonstrated how nearly all climate mitigation measures either depend upon or will impact freshwater systems. They also show critical opportunities to reduce and capture emissions through improved water and sanitation management and protection of freshwater ecosystems.

Goals.

(1) mobilize actors to reduce and capture emissions in the water sector

(2) mainstream methods to assess water risks and opportunities in carbon management

(3) advocate climate actions to enhance, and not undermine, socio-ecological resilience

How will we achieve our goals?

WINZ works with partners to build and present the evidence base on water and resilient mitigation. It provides forums to regularly communicate positive, practical messages into the political arena. By demonstrating both benefits and the means to implementing emission reductions strategies, we expect to increase uptake of climate mitigation actions within water sector organizations globally. Any organization, network or individual can join WINZ or use its materials.

Who are we?

The founding members of WINZ come from a wide range of organizations and individuals associated with water. A WINZ Secretariat was established in 2023 and is hosted by the Alliance for Global Water Adaptation (AGWA). WINZ aims to serve as a global public good with no national, political or religious affiliation. We welcome you and offer you collaboration, solidarity, and a sense of purpose and hope in your work.

Please seize the moment, join our movement, and let us achieve more together!
